An Amazing Thing Happened

In June of 1993 I took B.S. Computer Engineering from Adamson University. It’s a 5-year course.

But since I’m young, naïve, and a lazy student, I had to finish it for 6 years and a summer class.

Graduate na lahat ng friends ko and I’m still at school.

Frankly, I was down a little bit during my last semester. I feel dumb. “Slow” ika nga. Your friends are all working, making money and here I am still in University finishing my degree.

And then…an amazing thing happened.

It was a summer class and I’m taking “Jose Rizal.”

That was the last subject that I had to take to finally finish my degree and get a diploma.

Our class starts at 1pm. And since summer (March), it was so hot.

So para hindi naman ako pawis na pawis at amoy araw papasok sa classroom, I leave our house early and then tambay sa Library na air conditioned.

Then after our class, tambay sa Library ulit for another 30-60 minutes.

Back then, we don’t have mobile device, no facebook, no YouTube, no twitter.

To kill time, I read books.

I actually don’t like reading. But I had no choice. Ano gagawin ko sa library, right?

Since I’m a Computer Engineering student, I inclined to read computer books.

I learned about HTML and how to design a website. That was back in 1999. For fun, I launched a simple website with photos of my friends and their short-bio.

That simple website landed me a job as a web designer in a local Internet service provider.

I then discovered that my salary was higher better than my college friends who graduated ahead of me.

This made me realize the “Power of Reading Books.”

12 months after, I got tired of designing websites so I decided to in to computer programming. I bought few books, read it, and soon enough I got a programming job and got paid doubled of my salary as designer.

In my head I was like…”Wow! Just by reading books, I doubled my income.”

And then, this entrepreneurial bug bit me.

I wanted to become an Entrepreneur. I wanted to be from this “corporate jail.”

So guess what I did?

Yup. I bought books and invested in my education.

Today, if you don’t have spare cash for books, you can go to YouTube and you can watch tons of videos about business, marketing, and personal development.

The key here is you MUST be hungry for information. There’s always a room for growth personally and professionally.

Find a role model. People who already succeeded in the business you want to start. Learn from them. Copy them.

Role modelling is no doubt a short cut to success.
